Salt in Occitane has, of course, been around longer than civilisation itself. In 1911, the engineer Madame Le Danois established the excavation. The 350-hectare saltworks provided a livelihood for many families. Produced on site, the salt was mainly used in agri-food activities such as salting, cheesemaking, baking, etc.

 

Gruissan saltworks are located in an exceptional setting in the heart of the Narbonnaise Regional Natural Park. Between the sea and the mountains, the salt marshes stretch over several hectares between the Clape massif and the Mediterranean Sea. This little gem of the Mediterranean coast offers a unique environment. The flora and fauna blend these two landscapes. You might spot some unusual bird species, including pink flamingos basking in the saltwater lagoons.
