This Long pepper, originally from North East India still grows in the wild on the foothills of the Himalayas. This elongated peppercorn with catkins measuring up to 3cm grows on a bushy shrub. It is harvested at maturity and dried in the sun.
This long pepper has an elongated shape and is also known as a catkin. Its hot and spicy flavour encompasses delicious notes of cinnamon, liquorice and aniseed. Grate it or crack it over lamb dishes and tomato sauce. Its surprising aromas of liquorice, aniseed and cinnamon balance out its hot and spicy flavour.
Always grind the long peppercorns with a pestle and mortar first before putting it in your pepper mill.
