Fragrant and fruity with just a hint of spiciness, mostarda is a highly appreciated condiment in Italian cuisine. Made from fruits, sugar and mustard essence, it is especially popular to accompany cheeses, meats as well as desserts, such as ice cream. We

The history of mostarda dates back to the sixteenth century, when the peasant families used to prepare it in order to preserve their fruits for longer.

Lazzaris still prepare mostarda the traditional way by peeling the fruit and cutting it into medium size chunks. They then put them in a bowl and add sugar to completely cover the fruit, and let sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours they catch the juice, transfer it to a saucepan and bring it to a boil: they repeat this process three times, always letting the preparation sit for 24 hours, then add the mustard. Finally, let the preparation cool down and pour it into jars.

Our suggestion: we recommend enjoying it with patés, rillettes, terrines and foie gras.
